Research Interests
Our research aims to create nanostructures whose functions arise through precise three-dimensional structure. Our approach relies on both chemical synthesis and self-assembly. Rigorous characterization of both structure and function are used to inform future design of macromolecules and supramolecular assemblies to meet challenges in nanoscience, biotechnology, and chemical biology.
Biohybrid Macromolecules
Folding in proteins creates atomically precise three-dimensional structures that have been difficult to cultivate into functional assemblies of nanostructures. Appropriate design of synthetic macromolecule-protein conjugates is anticipated to facilitate organization of proteins into nanostructured arrays that retain the native protein's structure and function.
Macromolecular Chirality and Folding
Synthetic molecules capable of adopting well-defined conformations (foldamers) offer an alternative to proteins in nanoscience and chemical biology. De novo design of minimalist proteins (a-peptide foldamers) highlights the potential to elucidate the principles that underlie macromolecular folding. An oligomer approach to macromolecular chirality and folding can bridge the knowledge gap between proteins and polymers.
Conjugated Polymers
Conjugated polymers are attractive targets for nanoscience, as molecular wires, and alternative energy research, as photovoltaic components. Individualized conjugated polymers are the ideal targets for such applications. Self-organized arrays of molecular wires are being targeted through architectural modification of conjugated polymers.
