Application Procedures

Application procedures for students with B.S. degrees from institutions from within the USA

The application process is web-based. Apply on-line at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=sunysb-gs. Domestic students who apply online will receive an automatic fee waiver.

As part of the application process you will need to provide:

  1. Two copies of official transcripts of undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate course work.
  2. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (Stony Brook’s code for score reporting is 2548)
  3. Three letters of recommendation. If recommendations are not submitted online, please provide two original copies of each recommendation.

Although we will consider an application file at any time and we do not have a deadline, it can be to your advantage to apply by February 1 if you wish to begin your studies in the fall. Support is provided through teaching and research assistantships and industrial, university and departmental fellowships. For the 2010-2011 academic year, the stipend is $25,000 a year (plus subsidized health insurance and a full tuition scholarship).

Earlier applications are encouraged, particularly for those wishing to be considered in the campus-wide competition for Graduate Council Fellowships.

Application Procedures for Students with B.S. degrees from International Institutions

The application process is web-based. Apply on-line at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=sunysb-gs.

As part of the application process you will need to provide:

  1. Two sets of official transcripts of undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate course work.
  2. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (Stony Brook’s code for score reporting is 2548,)
  3. If your native language is not English, then you must submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores. A TOEFL of 90/250/600 or higher is required for consideration for financial support.
  4. Three letters of recommendation. If they are not submitted online, please supply two original copies of each recommendation.
  5. A non-refundable application fee of $100 (You may qualify for the waiver by receiving a B.S. degree from an accredited U.S. college/university. A Master's Degree is NOT a qualification for the waiver)
